After extensive trials with pre-series vehicles, Krauss-Maffei was contracted for series production, and the first production tank was handed over to the troops on 9 September 1965. Between September 1965 and February 1970, a total of 1,845 Leopard 1 tanks were built for the Bundeswehr in four production lots, and the first lot was delivered by July 1966. Panzerbataillon 194 served within Panzergrenadierbrigade 19. Once the last vehicles of the first four lots had been delivered, the German Army began an upgrade programme that produced the Leopard A1, adding gun stabilization, armoured skirts along the hull flanks and a thermal sleeve on the gun barrel.</span></li> </ul>
